High School Program, Grades 9-12

High School represents growth from the teen to adult world. Students need guidance as they take on additional responsibility but also need freedom and decision-making skills as they learn independence.

Curriculum

Personal Competency Based Collaborative Classes / Seminars

At Walden, we provide both mentorship and individual choice every day. All teachers strive to infuse all of our classes with experiential learning (field experiences, project work, etc.), Socratic teaching (discussion, questioning, debate) media support (film clips, websites, etc.), and critical thought.

Students at Walden are are often given choices about the assignments they will complete to demonstrate mastery.

Healthy Living

Healthy Living will be a time for students to set physical and nutritional goals to develop healthy living competencies. Students have a choice in how they spend this time. Some examples are:

Basketball
Off campus walk
Gardening
Field Games
Yoga

Time set aside during the day with a connective, emotional, and physical base is how we check in with student needs. In this space we develop compassion. We also view movement as an important component of active learning.

Core Subjects

Utah State requires a specific number of credits in various subjects such as Math, Science, History and Language Arts to graduate.

At Walden, you have more flexibility to create a schedule that aligns with your interests.  For example, Math is the only class you will take that stays the same all year (with the same teacher and in the same period). Other core subjects, can be moved around from trimester to trimester, depending on what seminars you choose to take.

We will ensure your transcript reflects the quality and diversity of your choices.

College Readiness Classes

Walden students, parents, teachers, and counselors work extraordinarily hard to ensure that every senior is admitted to at least one college before graduation.

In 2023–2024, Walden School's graduation rate was 96%, exceeding the state average.

Additionally, 71% of Walden students scored 18 or higher on the ACT, compared to the state average of 62%.

Walden School also received a Readiness Coursework score of 96%, outperforming the state average of 79%.

Over the years, Walden graduates have attended colleges as diverse as Sarah Lawrence, Antioch, Tufts, Bryn Mawr, Cambridge, Stanford, BYU, Bard College, Colorado School of Mines, Barnard, NYU, Evergreen, Seattle University, University of Washington, Westminster, USU, SUU, UVU and U of U.

We proudly congratulate our seniors on their achievements.

Flex Time

Students use flex time to choose their own educational pathways, to foster a sense of community and leadership, and to support their extracurricular pursuits and talents.

Students will nurture Walden Way characteristics, including Curiosity, Creativity, Compassion, and Cultivation. They will choose from a variety of project-based and expeditionary learning experiences rooted in real world issues and driven by student interests and passions.

Integrated Service

In high school, we have dedicated Service Days on the first Friday of every month, allowing students to give back to the community regularly.

Career & Technical Education

Embark on an adventure!

Walden partners with the Utah State Board of Educations’ CTE program to offer students the opportunity to explore exciting careers in multiple fields of study.  Career Pathways help students to develop essential skills and competencies that ensure a smooth transition to meaningful, satisfying, postsecondary opportunities and careers.

Utah Career Pathways align with and are categorized by the national Career Clusters®. Each Career Pathway culminates in an industry recognized credential of value.

When you follow a CTE Pathway, enjoy field experiences, expeditions, hands-on projects, and internships.

Computer Science

High School students will have the opportunity to pursue USBE’s Programming & Software Development CTE Pathway, taking explorer, concentrator, and completer CS classes and earning college credit in IBDP Computer Science or Design Technology. Students can also participate in a wide array of CS field experiences, internships, and extra-curricular clubs and workshops. Visiting CS professionals will be invited to Walden to talk with students, share their experiences, and inspire students to prepare themselves for careers in computer science. Walden’s after school program, CASA, will offer CS-related clubs built around student interest. We offer membership in the national Technology Student Association (TSA)
